A Little Yorkie Color History

Yorkies Come in More Colors Than You May Think

Some colors and patterns seen in Yorkies have long histories within established bloodlines, while others raise questions about their origins. Solid black and merle are two examples that deserve a closer look. Modern DNA testing can identify many of the genes responsible for coat color and pattern, but identifying a color gene is not the same thing as proving when, where, or through which ancestry that gene entered a bloodline.

NOTE: AKC itself notes that its DNA profiling is used for genetic identity and parentage and does not determine whether a dog is purebred.

From Working Terrier to Yorkshire Terrier

Huddersfield Ben (1865–1871) became one of the most influential dogs in the development of the modern Yorkshire Terrier.

The Yorkshire Terrier we know today developed in northern England during the 1800s. During the Industrial Revolution, Scottish textile workers migrated into Yorkshire and brought small terriers with them. These dogs were bred with other local terrier types and were valued as determined little working dogs, including for controlling rats and other vermin around mills and homes.

Early Yorkies were not yet the tiny, uniform dogs we recognize today. They varied more in size and appearance and were known by names such as the Broken-Haired Scotch Terrier and Toy Terrier. As breeders began selecting for a smaller dog with a long, silky coat, the Yorkshire Terrier gradually took on its more familiar appearance.

By the 1870s, the name Yorkshire Terrier had come into use. One particularly influential dog, Huddersfield Ben, born in 1865, became an important foundation sire in the development of the modern breed. Over time, the tough little working terrier became equally prized as a show dog and companion.

From Black & Tan Puppy to the Adult Coat

Yorkshire Terrier puppies are typically born with a black and tan coat. As they mature, the dark coat may gradually lighten and develop the steel-blue coloring associated with the traditional adult Yorkshire Terrier. However, the degree of color change can vary from dog to dog, and some Yorkies retain a very dark or nearly black coat as adults. The tan markings may also deepen into a richer golden shade with maturity. Because coat color can continue developing over time, an adult Yorkie may look quite different from—or surprisingly similar to—the way it looked as a puppy.

Why Yorkie Colors Can Look So Different

Coat color is controlled by several different genes working together. These genes influence which pigments a Yorkie produces, where those pigments appear on the coat, and how they may change as the dog matures. This is why Yorkies can display variations such as parti, chocolate, gold, and other colors and patterns while still sharing many of the physical characteristics associated with the breed.

A Recessive Pattern With an Interesting History

Parti Yorkshire Terriers have a white coat pattern combined with areas of black or blue and tan or gold. Although the parti pattern may look very different from the traditional Yorkshire Terrier coat, the gene responsible for the white spotting can be carried unnoticed for generations when a dog inherits only one copy. When two carriers are bred together, parti-patterned puppies can appear in a litter, which helps explain how the pattern can seemingly appear unexpectedly within established Yorkie bloodlines.

Understanding the Gold Coat

The Gold & Golddust Yorkies

Gold has always been part of the Yorkshire Terrier color palette. In the traditional adult coat, the head, chest and legs develop rich golden or tan coloring while the body typically develops the familiar dark steel-blue coat. Some Yorkies, however, develop much more extensive golden coloring, ranging from pale cream-gold to deeper honey, copper or reddish shades.

Coat color is influenced by several genes that control which pigments are produced, where they appear and how intense they become. Genetic variants affecting red and yellow pigment can contribute to predominantly golden coats, but appearance alone does not identify the exact genetic combination. DNA testing can help determine which coat-color variants an individual dog carries.

Historical Note: Gold itself is not a newly introduced color in the Yorkshire Terrier—the breed standard specifically describes rich golden tan as part of the traditional coat. What differs in predominantly or solid-gold Yorkies is the distribution of that coloring, rather than the existence of golden pigment itself. The traditional standard calls for a blue-and-tan adult coat, so an extensively gold or solid-gold Yorkie falls outside that standard appearance.

A Lighter Expression of the
Golddust Coat

Golddust is a name commonly used for Yorkies whose coats mature into very pale gold, cream, ivory or champagne-like shades. Visually, they fall within the same general red-and-yellow pigment family as other predominantly gold Yorkies, but the name describes the appearance rather than proving a specific genetic formula. The exact shade can be influenced by multiple coat-color and intensity genes, so DNA testing is needed if a breeder wants to know which variants an individual dog actually carries.

Chocolate & Chocolate Parti Yorkies

Genetics & Standard Note:Chocolate is produced by recessive brown-pigment genetics, which means the trait can be carried without being visible and may appear when two compatible carriers are bred. Chocolate and Chocolate Parti fall outside the traditional Yorkshire Terrier show-standard colors. Modern DNA testing can identify many of the variants responsible for brown pigmentation and white spotting, but it cannot by itself establish when or how those variants first entered a particular Yorkie bloodline.

From Puppyhood to Adulthood

Chocolate Parti Yorkie combines chocolate pigmentation with the white spotting pattern commonly called parti. The chocolate genetics change dark eumelanin to brown, while separate white-spotting genetics create the areas of white throughout the coat. Because these traits are controlled separately, Chocolate Parti Yorkies can vary greatly in how much chocolate and white they display and where those markings appear.
 

As puppies mature, coat length, texture and shade can change, making their markings appear softer or more defined over time. Penelope is a beautiful example of how the rich chocolate, bright white and warm facial coloring of a Chocolate Parti can remain distinctive from puppyhood into adulthood. Historical Note: Biro is a newer name in the Yorkie color story, with breeder histories tracing its early development to Germany in the early 2000s. The first registered Biro Yorkshire Terrier is generally reported to have been a chocolate, white and gold female born from Biewer lines, followed soon after by other similarly colored puppies. As breeders continued working with the color, the name “Biro” came into use and is said to have been created from the names of two breeders involved in its early development. Today, Biro is used by some breeders and registries to describe this distinctive chocolate, white and gold variety. It is not an AKC-recognized Yorkshire Terrier color and is not recognized by AKC as a separate breed.

Historical Note: Chocolate and Chocolate Parti are outside the traditional Yorkshire Terrier show-standard colors. The AKC standard centers on the familiar blue-and-tan adult coat, and AKC judging guidance specifically identifies solid chocolate, chocolate-and-tan and parti-colored Yorkies as nonstandard colors. Because chocolate is recessive, the brown gene can be carried by dogs that do not visibly appear chocolate and may be expressed when two compatible carriers are bred.

Understanding the Chocolate Coat

Chocolate Yorkies carry recessive genetic variants that change eumelanin—the pigment that would normally appear black—into shades of brown. The best-known chocolate variants occur at the B locus in the TYRP1 gene. A dog generally needs to inherit a recessive brown variant from both parents for the chocolate color to be expressed, which means the gene can be carried without being visible in every generation.

Chocolate affects the dark pigment of the coat as well as pigmented areas such as the nose and foot pads, giving chocolate Yorkies their characteristic brown pigmentation. It does not turn red or yellow pigment brown, so tan and golden markings are controlled separately and may still appear alongside the chocolate areas.

Understanding the Biro Parti Coat

Biro Parti is a name commonly used for Yorkies displaying a tricolor combination of chocolate, white and gold or tan. The chocolate pigmentation replaces the black pigment that would otherwise appear in the coat, nose and other pigmented areas, while the parti pattern produces the areas of white. While coat length, texture and shade may change as a Yorkie matures, the underlying distribution of chocolate, white and gold gives the Biro its recognizable appearance.

Merle Yorkies & Their Color Variations

Merle is a distinctive coat pattern caused by a variant in the PMEL gene. Rather than creating one specific coat color, merle alters areas of eumelanin—the pigment responsible for black and brown coloring—producing irregular areas of lighter, mottled or marbled pigmentation. Because the pattern develops differently in every dog, no two merle coats are exactly alike.

The appearance of merle depends greatly on the Yorkie’s underlying coat color and other color genetics.
